How Long

I wonder if anyone has ever done a study about how long it takes a married couple to transition on average from hand me downs to their own hand selected home furniture? We have one couch that was not a hand me down, and thats it as far as "sit on" furniture. Someday it would be really nice to be able to pick out some new stuff someplace other than a relatives garage sale. I don't mean that to sound greedy either, it's just one of those things that would be a nice thing should it ever happen.
